Interview - Simon Hinter

29 avril, 2012

C'est sans doute dans sa capacité de manier la musique avec une grande originalité que Simon Hinter a su attirer notre oeil et on a eu la chance de lui poser quelques questions sur son travail et sa façon de concevoir la musique. On l'en remercie d'avance.

High Five Magazine : We don't know much about you, can you tell us a bit more ?

Simon Hinter Hey, my name is Simon Hinter. I was born in 1981 in Germany and I make music! I started to listen to Underground HipHop when I was sixteen. Due to a friend I caught the option to mix my first bought records on his technics. He listened to techno and I loved Rap Music so it was the deadly combination. After that my mind opened more and more for other kind of styles, till today. Music is not my main job. I do social work in a conveying school and perhaps I want to study teaching professing next years..

HFM :  How could you describe your music ? You seem to seek evolution from a song to another, is it due to your personality ?

S.H : I think you can´t describe it in one word because there are so many influences in my tracks. I never wanna make music for one special scene or subculture. Evolution? Yes, definitly. I experienced a lot of things in my lifetime and not ever the good ones so I reflect that in my tracks. I´m actually working on my HipHop aka Mr.Backside! That's fun for me and my friends. I don't give a fuck about musical rules or principles. That's my music, so i can do whatever I want and whenever i want ! I´m happy that there are some people out there who can feel the same.

HFM : What obsesses you ? What music have a special effect on you ? What were your several inspirations ?

S.H : I love old music. Especially Jazz. It´s so innocent and fresh. At home I often listen to David Axelrod, Ahmad Jamal, Donald Byrd and all the others and of course HipHop charactarized much of my productions. I don´t often listen to Techno and Housemusic at home. I like Detroit Techno, House Music of the 90's for playing at parties. I love electronic music from Northern Germany. In Hamburg especially there are so many great artists. But much of actual electronic releases makes me so tired that i wanna make something complete new.

HFM : I noticed that beside your tracks, you’ve already done two podcasts and you appear on a line-up with Christopher Rau, how does it make you feel about your progress already ?

S.H : I think I know I´m a good DJ. I play vinyl for over ten years. Mixing & Scratching but I don´t define my music through these net podcasts. I define my music through my own tracks. If someone would listen to my mix, he has to book me for a club night ! Perhaps I can make a new mix for free download for my fans(Hehe). But that's not my main instance. Oh yes. I´m a little bit nervous about that. I like Christopher Rau and I never was in Copenhagen. It will be great. I owe a lot of this my partner Philogresz who pushed my music the last 2 years and he makes this possible for me. You need this people because
I´m not a buisness man. I´m a producer. Thats my determination.

HFM : How do you prefer making music, working in a studio, playing a live or maybe remix tracks ?

S.H : I love to sit on Sunday morning at my little homestudio. Smoking and drinking coffee to catch new ideas. I don´t need big studios. Everything I need is my notebook, good speakers and my personal sound creator tools. I play live with ableton, too. But this part in under construcion every day. I learn more and more about that and perhaps I have more money sometimes to pay more hardware shit.

HFM : How has your work started to attract the eye of the music scene ?

S.H : My first record was released on ProgCityDeep Trax., I never thought these tracks would be released anytime. A friend of mine, also a DJ and Producer asked me to send them a demo cd.

HFM : You’ve already four EP on your account, what is the next step then ? An album maybe ?

S.H : Yes, there is an Album in focus but I can not say when and which tracks i want to release. It´s the most personal thing so I want to take time for that.

HFM : Lastly, what are your main interests ? What's the last book you read ? The last thing you bought ?

S.H : Yeah. Nice Questions. I love hiking, being in nature and I love Videogames, (especially the older arcade stuff.) I love Science Fiction and Blaxplotation Movies. All that trash stuff. The last book I´ve read was "Limit" from Frank Schätzing. One of the best Science Fiction Scripts I´ve ever read. I Think it's
good stuff for a movie !
